Currently in the US 1 in 3 families are struggling to afford the diapers they so desperately need. We hope to lift some of that financial burden during such a rough economic time.
Some families can not afford the $18 a week it takes to keep their child in a clean diaper. Forced to choose between other necessities, such as food and medicine, some families are reusing dirty diapers. This may seem shocking to some, but to others this is a harsh reality. We want to change this. Through our Diaper Loaning Program we will donate new and/or gently used cloth diapers to low income families, those suffering from natural disaster, and financial hardships on a case by case basis.
We understand that switching to cloth can seem expensive, most initially question the affordability of cloth diapers. Seeing diapers priced at $20 can be scary! However, we assure you that there is a way to cloth diaper inside of a budget you are comfortable with.
The average cost of disposable diapers for a child from birth to fully potty trained is around $2,500. The average cost to diaper a child the same amount of time with cloth is between $300 and $500.
Many people praise disposables for their super absorbency, but that isn’t good for baby! Due to the high absorbency, most don’t change their baby until after they’ve wet 2 or 3 times. Even though the baby’s skin may feel dry he is still sitting in a dirty diaper. This over exposure to ammonia can cause rashes. The high absorbency can over dry baby’s skin by absorbing natural oils, which can lead to a rash. Also, what makes disposable diapers absorbent is a harmful chemical known as SAP (Super Absorbent Polymer.) Many diapers also have ingredients that include perfumes, chlorine, dyes, bleach, and possibly other harmful materials. With cloth diapers you know your child is protected against these harmful materials.
The average child will go through 5,000 to 8,000 diaper changes before being potty trained. That adds up quick! 18 billion diapers are added to our landfills each year, where they will spend the next 250-500 years decomposing. The same number of diaper changes can be made with only 20 cloth diapers.
Services we provide:
Currently we host a Cloth Diaper Class every 6 to 8 weeks at A Nurturing Moment, located in Huntsville, AL. This is a great class for those thinking about choosing cloth diapers as well as those already using cloth diapers. If you check our events you’ll see when the next class will be.
Following each Cloth Diaper Class, we host a Diaper Swap. This is a great opportunity to get diapers at a low cost! Whether you are starting your cloth diaper stash, adding to it, cleaning it out, or just want to socialize with a few other cloth diapering moms, please stop in! The diapers available vary from one swap to the next, so you never know what will be for sale or trade!
Through our diaper loaning program we are able to help families in need by providing a diaper kit. Each kid will include enough diaper supplies for 20 diaper changes.
